Vieroitusoireita; Withdrawal syndromes

***********

The second week on the course went so fast, especially when I had to hurry for the course as early as the school opened and to leave only when they almost threw us out in the afternoon. So much fun to just try out everything, every now and then with success and then without success needing to re-do from the beginning.

************

Yksi uusi aihe oli takominen.

One new subject was hammering.

Erityisesti opin ymmärtämään hehkuttamisen merkityksen metallin ja hopean työstössä.
*********
I especially learned the meaning of heating the metal during the working it.

Käytiin läpi perusmuodot mitä saa aikaan kiilapää-, pallopää- ja suorapäisillä vasaroilla. Käytännössä pääsi kokeilemaa sitten muokata palkista ässän muotoisen tai kasin. Siinä sai kyllä hiukan hikoilla ja hakata. Todella terapiaa!

********

We went through the basic shapes you can get with different types of hammers. And we practised to get s-shape and 8- shape from a piece of I-shaped brass. I took some effort in hammering. Real anger therapy!

No, ehkä myös harjoitusta. Kuvassa mun aikaansaannokseni harjoituksista. Viilaus jäi kesken, kun sain tangon katki , ....siis viilalla :-) ja en sitten joutanut viriksien takia sitä tekemään loppuun (viris = opinto-ohjelman ulkopuolinen työ/projekti).

********

In summary, the message from the course was to offer practise on 4 basic techniques: filing, sawing, soldering and hammering. Hearsay, that everythong from there on is applying those with some imagination. At least according to Black-throated Diver (Kuikka), name being the nickname for one of the teachers. Maybe you need also some practise in addition to the previous. In the picture my practices. The filing went so well that I managed to saw the bulk into 2 pieces, and did not have time to finish it due to all the extras (extras = projects outside the learning agenda).

Meidän soveltava työ oli tehdä kulkuneuvo. Kuvassa mun roomalainen kärry. Huomatkaa kuinka monta "sormusta" olen saanut tehtyä siihen. Pyörät tietysti myös pyörivät.

*******

Applying the new techniques, our proejct work was supposed to be a vehicle. I did a Roman carriage. note how many "rings" I managed to put into the piece. The wheels, of course, roll.

With the little help of my friends, i.e. added with Laura's elephant...............

Opittiin kaikenlaista muutakin, mm. miten tehdään valu kotiolosuhteissa (siis, jos saat esim. hopean sulaksi oikeasti).

******

We learned many other things as well, such as, how to cast silver at home conditions (provided that you can melt the silver really).

Puolessa välissä viikkoa "lapset" löysivät koulun valssit ja syntyi aika monta valssattua kuparilankaa, joista juottamalla ja hopeoimalla syntyi sormuksia ja rannekoruja vähän itse kullekin.

****************

In the middle of the week we found the rolling machine. Hence, a great lot of rings and bracelets were born by soldering and silverplating.

Loppuviikosta kokeilin ihan hopeaakin eli pari sormusta ja taottu riipus.

****

At the end of the week I tried silver, thus couple of rings and a hammered pendant.

Nostan hattua Sepolle!

************

Just to show a brave work. One guy in the course just took and hammered a whiskey mug as his first ever silver hammering work. Applaudes to Seppo!

Nyt pitää sitten hankkia omat työvälineet seriöösiin hopeatyöhön. Vieroitusoireisiin kävin jo kirjautumassa lähiseudun Kansalaisopiston kursseille syksyllä.

*********

Now I need to acquire my own tools for serious silver works. For withdrawal syndromes I already managed to enroll myself to couple of courses in the nearby evening institute.

Linkkejä fanaatikoille/links for fanatics

**********************

Those who have studied French, know that the term "fanatique" means very enthusiastic hobbyist, not the politically colored meaning used today in media. That is the state when I have spent the good half of the Saturday morning reading through the wholesale catalogs of professional jewellery making tools and equipment. Of course dreaming about the own workplace equipped with nice tools.

While dreaming, I will share these links with your, as many companies have their web sites etc, which you can look, if interested. It is not so obvious to google these, at least I had not encountered all of them.

****************

Perinteiset Tukholman -risteilyt saavat uutta sisältöä, jos haluaa käydää kuolaamassa Ab Konrad Wahlströmin liikkeessa Magnus Ladulåsgatan 53, näyttäisi olevan Södermalmissa, lähin tunnelbanaani olisi Medborgarplatsen, josta 3 korttelia länteen (katu on noin itä-länsisuuntainen).

****************

Traditional cruises to Stocholm get new meaning, shoud you want to go drooling over things concretely in a shop, as the first wholesaler is in Södermalm in Stockholm, address Magnus Ladulåsgatan 53, closest metro Medborgarplatsen. The street is about 3 blocks away from the station and runs in east-west direction. Open also on Saturdays, but only on odd numbered weeks. Check the home pages www.konradw.se

Toinen putiikki on jyhkeä Fischer (kokonaan: Karl Fischer GMBH), jonka kataloogilla voisi tappaa isommankin kärpäsen (on siis painava).

Internet -osoite: http://www.fischer-phorzheim.de

****************

The other one is German company named Fischer (the whole name Karl fischer GMBH), with whose catalogue you could kill even a bigger fly (=it is heavy).

I haven't yet memorised it completely this morning, but I will share the contact details with you here.

Internet address: http://www.firscher-phorzheim.de

Should you need to email hem: info@fischer-phorzheim.de

*************

Tässä kohden voisin siteerata yhtä historiallista lausetta työstä (Arbeit....), mutta tyydyn käyttämään Fischerin mainoslausetta

GUTES WERKZEUG, BESSERE ARBEIT !

:-)

*************

I could close by citing one German saying staring with "Arbeit...", but I am good by closing with Fischer's advertising slogan:

GUTES WERKZEUG, BESSERE ARBEIT !

Torstai on toivoa täynnä - Thursday is full of hope

Ilottelu Lahdessa jatkuu!

Samalla lyheni taas kynnet hiukan.

Yksi asia johti toiseen ja oikean harjoituksen sijaan pusasin tuota sormusta.

**************************************************************
Having fun in Lahti continues! In the picture our soldering exercises and the ring before silver plating. I would not get the job in shipyard Masa Yards with the quality of work, but it will do for now and I hope to master the skill during the coming week or so, if humbly fulfilling the exercises.

Talking about that, I, of course, took my own path again and continued working with the ring, starting by re-soldering the bad seam from yesterday. Then I wanted to make it into even shape (round and even sided), byt since I cut the starting piece just like that, the half of the one side was 1, 5 mm too much. Filing took until lunch, but I did it with Finnish sisu (stamina). Also my nails got halved at the same time.

***********************************

Final piece was a real result of co-operation! One fellow student lady sawed a piece of almost ready filed brass cube out of her filing exercise. After some filing for suitable shape to join the ring, I soldered it to ring for focal piece. It took me 45 minutes to solder, mostly because the pieces kept falling over and I could not apply the torch to the work. Teacher, on the other hand, plated the whole gorgeourness with silver. I finalised the piece by filing away the silver from the brass cube and the result is a two-colored silver and brass ring.

Käheä??

Cool???

Eka juotos tuotti sutta.

***************

Okay, the filing exercise is still unfinished im a state of "barbecued fork", because in a hurry I managed to file it into two pieces. I have two alternatives, either I will manage to solder it into one piece tomorrow or I will start over the full day filing of the screw and the rectangles.

******************************************

Työ jatkuu........................................

Koruilijan taivas - Heaven for hobby jewellery maker

Terveisiä Korutekniikka -kursseilta Lahden Muotoiluinstituutista! Jotta taso olisi alunperin asetettu oikein, opettaja tituleerasi meitä "Nolla-kurssilaisiksi" (siis 0-tason). Kyse on avoimen ammattikorkeakoulun kurssista, jonne meitä on tällä kertaa tullut 11 kpl innostuneita oppimaan uusia asioita ja erityisesti korujen tekoon liittyviä perustyömenetelmiä alkaen viilaamisesta ja sahaamisesta ja nyt kolmantena päivänä pienet pyromaanialut harjoittelivat juottamista.

********
Greetings from Basic Work Methods for Jewellery Making course from Lahti Institute of Design! In order to set the target level right, our teacher nominated us the "Zero level" participants (as compared to ordinary degree students). This is an open institute course, where this time 11 persons were willing to spent some learning effort on basic stuff like sawing, filing and today on the 3rd day in a row, we were doing some soldering exercises.

Puikko on puolestaan puolivalmis viilausharjoite.

****
The first learnings have been about the kinetic memory, which means that in order to do handicraft you need to teach the movements to your brain. Even if you see something, before that vision translates into a shape, you need to do a lot of exercise for that. So for two full first days we have filed and sawed until ours bodies hurt. If we are supposed to get these exercises , especially sawing the rectangles from a plate finished for passing this course, I think , I need to continue until Xmas :-), that is, if I don't learn this quicker. The pin in the picture is our filing exercise (also currently half done).

Mutta päätellen hymystäni tämä on kivaa!

But judging from my smile this is truly fun!

**********

Of course, when so many hobbyists gather together, you don't only learn what is in the agenda, but also a lot of extra like the best places to shop for materials, books to buy, gimmicks how to imitate some more professional tools at home ( I just love Saira's washing machine for silver tumble) etc. Here nobody laughss at each other's mistakes, instead you get a mental pat on shoulder and wish for better success next time.

OKAY:

*****

Now I start to do mental exercises on the things learned do far and to ponder what to create for execise, as we already got the specs for that.

Bon-bon perinteisiä kivikoruja - trad stone jewellery

2008- 54 Bon-bon, originally uploaded by Hobby pictures by Maya.

***********

I got by mail a package of crafting material, which I needed to take into use now-immediately-at once.

The first pic illustrates the Bon-bon, where black onyx is paired with lamp beads, my this summer's infatuation.

Tässä on sitä iki-ihanaa vaaleanpunaista eli phodoniittia. Minussa heräsi heti ISO prinsessa ja täytyi laittaa nämä menoksi. Yhdistin kauan sitten hankkimaani kuvioitua jadea. Lopputuloksena tanakka tätimäinen prinsessakoru "Mansikat". Tällä jyrää tätienergia!

****

This was the must material, very pink rhodonite. I felt how the BIG princess in me awakened and I just had to get this material on the go. I combined it with much earlier bought carved jade. The result was very auntie like piece "Strawberries". Aunt energy rules!

Huomenna alkaa kahden viikon kurssi Lahdessa, odotan innolla minkälaista porukkaa siellä on ja että saan uusia tekniikoita ja taitoja tehdä koruja. Jeee!

********

Tomorrow starts a two week course in Lahti. I am enthusiastic to learn what kind of people are participating. I expect to learn some new techniques to use with jewelleru making. Yeah!

Elokuun leijonia - August Lions

*******************************************

I have not been lazy, but since I made b-day presents for two August Lions; I could not publish those here until it is almost the time for the party.

I have gotten greatly smitten by DIY and it is almost as fun to create the packages and the cards as originally create the pieces of jewellery.

*****************

First set is named "Hit the Town", as i have found the extra long opera length necklace very versatile. You cam wear different detai as center piece variably and eac time it will look different. Ofcourse, you need to have a pair of earrings to match and colors to suit a young lady. Hit the town, babe!

Toinen setti juhlistaa ystävän isoa synttäripäivää, nimestäkin voi arvata: The Big 5-oh!

*********************************************

The other set celebrates my friend's big anniversary, thus named "The Big 5-oh!".

The piece has onyx for Lion's horoscope stone, balanced with Tigereye. Crystals are supposed to fortify the good qualities of stones, so this is truly a power piece for Lionness. As such it was too lonely, so I added a second row of small sweet water pearls to represent the recipient's large network of friends.

Eli onneksi olkoon molemmille! / Happy birthday to both of you!

******

Finally, a piece for myself with reserve money, with ominous name "Le Shopping!", where I am trying to use copper which does not come naturally for me.
