Uuden oppimista - Learning new

En ole pitkään aikaan saanut mitään uutta aikaan. Yksi syy on, että olen ollut kursseilla, sekä hopeakorupajaa että art clay -juttuja ja kaikenlaista romua on puolivalmiina, mutta ei mitään sitten valmiina koruna.

Kyllä tässä taas nöyryys lisääntyy, kun esimerkiksi eilen onnistuin sulattamaan hienon art clay tuotokseni yrittäessäni laitta sitä kiinni sormusaihioon. Enpä paljoa ajatellut, kun laitoin juotospinsetilla kaksi osaa kiinni, että olisi helpompi juottaa. Noh, laittaessani lämpöä siihen, pinsetit tietysti painoivat sen art clay osuuden tunnistamattomaksi möykyksi ja ei sitä enää voi siihen laittaa. Siirryin mietintävaihteelle, että mitäs nyt, teenkö uusiksi (idea oli mielestäni hyvä) vai vaihdanko suunnitelmaa. Möykky on romuhopeaa.

I have not completed anything for such a long time, since I have been participating to silver workshop and art clay courses. I have several pieces in stock, but nothing as a completed piece of jewellery.

I am building my humbleness, as yesterday I managed to melt the wonderful art clay piece which I intented to solder on a piece of silver for mounting on the ring. I was not thinking too well as I put soldering thongs to hold the pieces together. As I applied some heat the thongs pressed the art clay into undescribable shape, so nothing I could use to the my ring. Well, at least a new piece of silver to the scrap pile. Now I am thinking whether to try again or change the design.

Olen alkanut piirrellä aihioita vihkoon. Eli muistiin juttuja ja suunnitelmia, mitä voisi olla kiva tehdä kun taidot karttuu. Edelleen juottaminen tuottaa välillä mitä sattuu, mutta pitää vaan yrittää.

Flunssasta huolimatta piti tuhertaa taas jotain. Ongelmana on, että jopeavarastoni on kovasti loppumassa ja jäljellä on vain pieniä palasia. Joudunpa siis harjoittelemaan pienessä mittakaavassa.

Despite the flu, I had to try out something. The problem is that my silver stash is almost finished, and I have only miniature pieces left. Well, I must practise in small scale.

Vasemman puoleinen pari on eka versio. Lähes sulatin nuo langat ja tietystikään ne ei menneet yhtään samaan kohtaan. Joten nämä on taas ihan eri paria.

Oli sitten pakko kokeilla samalla idealla, mutta hiukan tuhdimmilla paksuuksilla. Lisäksi yritin mittailla ja zuumailla hiukan tarkemmin. Juottamiseenkin yritin oikein keskittyä. Kakkospari onkin hiukan enemmän keskenään samanlainen.

Eka on nimeltään Virrat, koska siinä on kaksi jokea ja täysikuu. Toisen inspiraatio oli alunperin yksinkertainen tyttö ja mekko. Mutta lopputulos muistuttaa kovasti mökin takapihan mukaavuuslaitoksen ovea, en tietystikään voinut antaa sille sen nimeä, niin annetaan sitten vaikka Folklore.

The pair in the left is the first exercise. Again I almost got the wires melted and they of course did not go at all into similar fashion. So the pair is actually two individuals.

Then I just had to try out with the same diea, but wuth heavier gauges. I also tried to measure and zoom better while working. Also with soldering I was more concentrating. The secind pair turned out little bit more like each other.

The first pair is named Streams, as there are 2 rivers and a full moon. The second had an inspiration of a girl and a dress, but the result looked like the convenience place at the backyard of the cottage, so the name it got is Folklore ( I could not name it a Loo).

Inspiraationa oli syksyn lehdet, mutta liitettyäni tuon kiven nämä rupesivat muistuttamaan tumman kaunottaren silmiä. Ja koskapa nämä eivät ihan ole toistensa peilikuvia, niin nimeksi tuli Liza Minnelli (sen enempää kommentoimatta).

Kauhea nuha, joten en saanut enempää aikaiseksi tälle kertaa näiden viimeistelyn lisäksi, mutta ehkä perjantaisauna auttaa ja huomenna aloitan jotain uudella innolla.

My inspiration stemmed from fall leaves, but when I added the black Onyx these started to look like a dark beauty or eyes of a dark beauty, and since they are not exactly each others mirror images, I thought the name would be Lisa Minnelli (without any further comment).

I have terrible flu, so I did no do much other than to finalise with these. Well, maybe Friday sauna will help me get into my feet again and I could use well the weekend.

Maija keittää - Maija cooks

Tällä kertaa Maija keittää eli innostuin kokeilemaan kotikonstein tehtyjä vartalovoiteita ja kasvovesiä. Mutta kuten tavallista ensiksi piti hankkia perustavaraa alkaen ruusuvedestä tislatusta vedesta, öljyistä.

This time Maija cooks i.e. I got interested in trying out homemade body lotions and facial toners. But as usual, I needed to start with purchases: essential oils, distilled water, rose water etc.





Sain inspiksen siitä, kun pari viikkoa sitten Internetin ihmemaasta löysin ohjeen kynsisienen kotilääkkeeksi ja kokeilin sitä. Laitoin manteliöljyyn (n. 30 ml) muutaman tipan Tea Tree öljyä ja olen voidellut varpaankynttä sillä. Kahden viikon käytön jälkeen kynsi on huomattavasti puhdistunut ja se keltainen osuus (uusinfektio) on ikään kuin häipynyt. Nyt on vaan enää vanhaa kynsiosa, joka kasvaa ajanmyötä pois ja kynsi on taas terve.

Inspiration stems from the experience I got from trying out home remedy for nail infection. I got an idea from Internet discussion to put some drops of Tea Trea oil to almond oil ( 30 ml). After 2 weeks usage, the infected nail is cleansed and only the colored part is left, which will grow away in time leaving the healthy nail visible.

Here are my cookings:

Green Tea Body Lotion, in the left, the recipe is a variation from wikihow article (link in Finnish text).

I used green tea with mint as the liquid and added some drops of rosemary and lemon oils. Emulsificator was petroleum jelly. Basic oil was almond oil. The result was heavy gravylike consistence, which is solid if refrigerated. This would be basic daily lotion.

Purkki alhaalla oikealla on toinen variaatio, Honey Rose Sweet Almond Wheatgerm Rub, eli nimestäkin voi päätellä, että käytin vehnänalkioöljyä, tuplasin vaseliinin, lisäsin glyserolia, hunajaa, ruusuvettä. Eteerisena öljynä käytin palma rosaa (tasapainottaa, antiseptinen, edistää ihosolukon uusiutumista, kosteuttaa). En vielä tiedä tuliko kiinteämpää, mutta laitoin purkin kanssa jääkaappiin. Niin ja lisäsin myös muutamasta E-vitamiinikapesilsta öljyt mukaan, se toimii säilytysaineena ja antioksidanttina. Mene ja tiedä.

Jar in the right is another variation of the theme, Honey Rose Sweet Almond Wheatgerm Rub, so you can guess from the name the ingredients. I used wheatgerm oil, doubled the amount of petroleum jelly, added some glycerin, honey, rose water. As essential oil I used Rose Geranicum (it should balance, be antiseptic, hydratant, and facilitate skins cell renewal). I don't yet know if it is any more thicker, but I put it equally to the refridgerator. Yes, I also added some vitamine E for antioxidant and natural preservative.

Viimeinen on pikasekoitus kasvovedeksi, jota pitää aina ravistaa ennen käyttöä. Puolet ja puolet tislattua vettä ja ruusuvettä, noin teelusikallinen manteliöljyä, pari tippaa sitruunaöljyä. Tämän pitäisi olla piristävä ja kosteuttava kasvovesi "Lemon Rose Splash Toner".

Last one is a quick mix for facial toner, which needs shaking befre the use. Half and half rose water and distilled water, about 1 teaspoon of almond oil, couple of drops lemon oil. This is supposed to be envigorating and hydratant facial toner "Lemon Rose Splash Toner".

Here a close-up of lotions, no chemical colorings or perfumes. Then it is just to try out. If I am some day spotty or otherwise bad looking, maybe the lotions were not so powerful. I added some links, if you should be interested to learn more (see Finnish text).

You may need to check the effect of essential oils, what comes to allergies etc. so there will not be

1) Jamie Hogsett: Stringing style

Good basic book for bead-a-holics. The main technique to be used is stringing. As often, tehre are several pages about the the "basics", thus, you can start this hobby from scratch with ths book. Shows the variety of beads that there are, thus giving a inspiration. Level beginners.

Hyvä peruskirja helmihulluille. Päätekniikka on pujottelu Kuten tavallisesti, kirjan alussa on perstekniikat osio, joten kirja sopii ihan vasta-alkajallekin. Kirjan projekteissa on käytetty hyvin erinäköisiä helmiä, joten saat käsityksen kaikista kauniista mahdollisuuksista mitä on. Sopii aloittelijalle.

2) M.T.Ryan : Beaded Jewelry

Includes also some elementary wire works, linking loops, basic wire wrapping. What is good here is that there are different types of jewellery presented: bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings, thus you get a good overviews of how to do different pieces, and can continue on your own from this. Beginners level.

Quite much the same as the number 1), basic instructions plus a variety of projects for beginners. Good book to glance through, but not much more. Still there are so manymany beautiful beads.....So number 1 or 3 for beginners inspiration.

4) Marlene Blessing & Jamie Hogsett: Create jewelry /Pearls, Luxurious designs to make and wear

If you drool over sweet water pearls, then this is a book for you. Includes very basic projects in addition to some historical review "a pearls story". Now that I checked, the book also has some more advanced projects like "Chain reaction" and "Center of Attention" that combine silver nicely with pearls thus giving the hobbyist change to exercise her/his silversmithing skills as well. I think that I will try out those is due time. Level beginner-intermediate.

5) Nicola Hurst: Step-by-step: jewelry workshop

Book, which I am studying right now. Includes basic silversmithing techniques on hobbyist level, i.e. things presented are ones you can do at home type workshops. The book introduces basic techniques and after presenting few, it always has a project example where you can exercise the presented technique. Projects as such are quite modern looking and I believe many will like them as such. Very illustrative and good instructions. Level intermediary.

6) Linda Chandler & Choristine Ritchey: Wire Wrapping (Jewelry Studio)

This is a book from which I got the idea of starting to experiment with silver or metals in general. This books present the cold connections, i.e. you do not need to solder anything. It is enough to be able to cut wire and use it in wrapping. Thus, this is the forst step to new techniques from stringing and gives you quite a new look to your jewelry already. I have done some pieces based on these tehcniques and surprise, some of those are my favorites to wear. Very good book to get the basics from wher you can advance to own desgns easily. Level: beginner-intermediary.

Tarvii ainoastaan pystyä leikkaamaan metallilankaa ja kietomaan sitä erilaisiin liitoksiin. Näin ollen tämä on ehdottomasti hyvä aloittelukirja, jos tulella leikkiminen pelottaa. Kuitenkin tällä tekniikalla laajentaa peruspujotteluja ja saa aikaan ihan uudentyylisiä koruja. Minulla yksi suosikeistani on rannekoru, jonka tein täältä saamani inspiraation pohjalta. 7) Complete guide to making Wire Jewelry (ART Jewelry Books) (no author, I gues collection of articles?, ei ole kirjailijan nimeä, olisiko kokoelma artikkeleja??)

Little bit over promising name, but anyhow a good book for advancing with wire wrapping. Also some chainmaille projects are presented. This book is little bit of this and little bit of that, but it has some nice projects. I would not recommend as the first wire wrapping book, rather more as an inspirational review for your own designs. I have done few pieces based on this books projects and will do some from here as I am advancing to more silversmithing. Level: Intermediary- advanced.

8) Sharilyn Miller: Bead on wire: making handcrafted wire and beaded jewelry

If you have ever wondered how to do certain things like basic hooks, clasps, linked beads, twisted wire, caged beads etc. it is all here! Now that I glanced through this book, I noticed that I have tried almost everything in this book. So maybe it tells, how good and basic reference book this is! I would recommend this, especially if you want to add the level of selfmade things in your jewelry. Clear instructions and step-by-step pictures on how-to-do. Well worth the money spent. Level: beginner-advanced.

Kun katselin tätä tässä ja nyt, niin huomaan, että olen kokeillut lähes kaikkia tapoja. Ehkä se kertoo tämän kirjan perusluonteesta ja siitä, että tämä on hyvä referenssikirja, kun haluaa lisätä oman itsensä tekemää osuutta koruissaan, Selkeät ohjeet ja kohta-kohdalta kuvat neuvovat eteenpäin. 9) Cynthia B. Wuller: Inspired Wire

If you like the looks created by thing-a-majig, then this is a book for you. There are some basic instructions, but somehow the projects have left me cold. There are some that I could try, but so far this is a book too special style, so it is ether you like it or then you don't. I think the pieces will look good on young people. "Specialist book". Skill level: beginner-intermediary.

10) Jeanne Rhodes-Moen: Silver Threads, making filigree jewelry (thanks Annuli for the reference on this book!!)

If you want to exercise with soldering and you are a romantic in nature, this is the book for you. My recent purchase which I have just been reading, but I am sure that this will be one of the cornerstones in my jewelry library. One theme is the book is now to do basic elements in filigree, which you then can combine into your own designs. I find the approach very enticing, because the most satisfaction in doing your own jewelry comes from not directly from copying an piece but that you have put something of your own into the design. Level: advanced.

Tässä kirja, jos haluat harjoitella juottotaitojasi ja tykkäät romanttisista tyyleistä. Viimeisimpiä ostoksiani, jota olen vasta ehtinyt vain ihastella, mutta uskon, että tästä tulee yksi peruskirja korutekniikkakirjastossani. Yksi perusteema on, että kirjoittaja esittää peruskuviot, joilla voi sitten tehdä erilaisia koruja. Minusta tämä on hieno tapa, sillä se antaa mahdollisuuden käyttää tekniikoita omiin juttuihin, mikä mielestäni on kaikkein kivointa koko hommassa. Kirja on edistyneemmälle ja osaavalle tekijälle.

11) Joanna Gollberg: The art & cratf of making jewelry: A complete guide to essential techniques

This is a jewel itself! The book for very advanced hobbyist and even for a professional. No way a book to my skill level, but clearly an inspiration on where I can be after completing all the things in the books just reviewd (haha?). No, seriously, this book has so many beautiful things and explanations on tehcniques. This book does not proceed on projects but rather presents techniques and then several pieces as illustrations on what you can achieve. Basic bible on where you would like to be after few years of practising this art. Level: very advanced. Inspiration for others :-)

Todellinen löytö ja koru itsessään tämä kirja! Tasoltaan kirja on selkeästi pitemmälle edistyneemmälle harrastajalle ja jopa ammattilaiselle. Ei siis missään tapauksessa omalle tasolleni, mutta kirja toimii hyvin inspiraationa sille, missä voin olla itse muutaman vuoden päästä, erityisesti jos teen kaikki jutut noista aiemmista kirjoista (haha?). Kirja ei esittele projekteja, vaan etenee tekniikoittain ja täällä on paljon erikoisia asioita. Tekniikoiden kohdalla on mys esitetty miten tehdään ja lisäksi on kuvia erilaisista koruista, joissa ko. tekniikkaa on hyödynnetty. Todellinen inspiraation lähde erittäin edistyneelleharrastajalle, meille muille tavoitteellinen päiväunelma :-)

Ketjukirjoja, eli jossa olisi erilaisia tekniikoita joilla tehdä ketjua ja muita koruja, niin arvostaisin kovasti!!

Autotalli on rock! - Garage is rock!

Ei ole ihan loogista, mutta tänään kun oli kaunis syysilma, sain inspiraation hautautua autotalliin. Viimeistelin sormuksen, jota olin aloitellut viikolla.

On vielä hiukan alkukankeutta uusien työkalujen kanssa, mutta tämän päiväisen session perusteella olen osannut porata reikiä, kiillottaa dremelillä (tosin käsin sai paremman tuloksen), sahata kuvioita (noh, ympyröitä). Saha erityisesti tuntuu hyvältä ja terät oikein laadukkailta, ne tuntuu kestävän ja joustavankin katkeamatta.

Tässä sormukseni, Nimisormus, jossa riimukirjoituksella lukee tosi originellisti oma nimeni :-)

Not very logical, but today when it was so beautiful fall weather, I spent most of it sitting in the garage with inspiration. I finalised a ring with which I started during the week.

I still have some learning curve for the new tools, but after today's session I can make holes (i.e.drill), polish with the dremel (although by hand I got better results), saw some figures (well, circles). The saw especially felt good, the blades were of good quality and seemed to saw an even track.

Here is the ring, Name Ring, where there is my name written in runes.

Sitten oli mielessä kokeilla jotain muutakin saman tien, vaikka edellisen viilaamisessa meinasi jälleen usko loppua. Yksi haaste minulle on selvästikin yrittää miettiä asioita korumittakaavassa, ja kokeilin sitten väsätä korvikset. Sahasin pieneen palaseen pari ympyräreikää ja vasaroin palaa hiukan sinänsä. Sahasin sen kahtia ja käsittelin molemmat puolet vielä erikseen. Neliöosan koko on n 18 mm x 18 mm. Koristeeksi laitoin fasettihiotun granaattirondellin. Eli Corn Flakes -lorvikset alla.

Then I wanted to try out something else at the same sitting, although I almost lost my faith in achieving results while filing the earlier work. One clear challenge for me is to think in the jewellery scale, so I thought to try out with earrings. I sawed couple if circles into a little piece of silver, hammered it little bit and then sawed it into two pieces. I worked with each part still a little for shaping. The size of each square is about 18 mm by 18 mm. To decorate, I added faseted granat rondelle. So here are Corn Flakes:

Sitten olin aika tyytyväinen itseeni ja muutaman tunnin sessioon musiikin kera, joten palkitsin itseni mukavalta kahvikupposella ja ihastelin töitäni.

Then I was quite satisfied with myself and with the few hours session with music, so I pampered myself with a cup of coffee while admiring the results.

Luomisen tuskaa - Creativity block

Nyt se sitten tuli, aito, oikea luomisen tuska! Istuin lauantaina pitkän tovin vain hiplaamassa helmiä ja vaijereita, aivan hukassa koko homman kanssa. Mulle melkein iski paniikki!

Ei että ei olisi ollut ideoita, mutta mulla oli olo, etten osaa!

Lähdin purkamaan tilannetta nypläämällä jotain ihan muuta, siitä syntyi kaksi "Omituista otusta", eli jonkinlaisia pukukoruja/rintarosseja. Nämä ovat sen verran suuria, että pitää olla ehkä neule tai joku huivi tms. jonka pistää näillä kiinni.

Tietystikään taaskaan ei ollut oikeaa vahvuutta eli toinen on hiukan ali, vain 1mm lankaa ja toinen taas hevi, 1.6 mm valmiista kaulusrenkaasta väännetty.

Now it came, the total creativity block! I just sat throughput the Saturday touching the pearls and beads, totally lost with the doing. I almost panicked!

Not that I would not have ideas, but I had the feeling of not knowing how-to-do.

I started to unwind the situation by creating something totally different for me. Thus two pieces of jewellery with no function came about. These brooches are little bit big, maybe can be used with a scarf or with a knitted blouse.

1.2 mm wire would have been the optimal, but of course I did not have it, so one was created using 1mm and the other frm readymade necklace base of 1.6 mm.

Sitten piti verrytellä peruskorujen parissa ja tein kyllä keveimmän korun mitä koskaan, eli peruslinkitetty ketju, hopeaa ja fasettihiottuja kristalleja.

Then I needed to strech my fingers with some basic piecem thus necklace with linked loops and silver chain.

Lopuksi laitoin omatekoriipuksen yhteen amatsoniitin kanssa ja syntyi Haltija, korun väri on jotenkin pois tästä maailmasta, hento ja sitten tuo riipuksen keskiö on ikään kuin käärme, ikuisuuden symbolina tulossa vaikkapa lähteestä.

Finally I put my selfmade pendant together with amazonite and thus created "Fairy". The color of this piece is almost outsie of this world, also the snake as symbol of eternity coming from the well, thus name got its origin.
