Perushelmeilyä - Basic beading

Ystävän kanssa olimme shoppailemassa, tietysti askartelutarvikkeita ja korutarvikkeita. Mukaan tarttui vastuttamattomia simpukkahelmiä.

Went shopping with a lady friend for cratfs and jewellery materials. One of the findings were these lovely seashell beads.


Näistä rakentui sitten piiitkä nauha. Emmin olisiko pitänyt tehdä perinteisin solmuin, mutta kun se lanka on jotain 2m, niin en usko että olisi heti riittänyt tähän. Mutta voi olla, että uudelleen teen tämän jonkinajan kuluttua.

They became to be a loooong necklace. I considered making it using the traditional knotting, but then I was lazy. It may be that I will re-thread these after a while anyway.

En ole osannut arvostaa puuhelmiä. Mutta tässä yhtenä päivänä laitoin neuleen kanssa yhdet aiemmin tehdyt ja , kas kummaa, sain pitkästä aikaa kehuja koruista (olivat sitten sen verran erilaiset?). Joten tein suosikkivioleteista yhden version. Mustat ovat luuta.

I haven't fully appreciated wooden beads. But the other day I was wearing one earlier made set and I got so many compliments that day, so I decided to create a piece with my favorite violet beads. Black neads are of bone.

Viimeisin setti: fasettilasihelmiä, simpukkahelmiä ja riipuksena lasidonitsi. Ystävä houkutteli sanomalla näitä ROCK, mutta mun mielestä nää on ihan kuiteskin kesyt. Ehkä olisi pitänyt kysyä malli :-)

The last set: faseted glass beads, seashell beads and pendant is a glass donut. My friend lured me by saying these would be a ROCKstyle, but maybe I should have enquired the model as well :-)

Muulla saralla: ompelua, eli koskaan ei ole liikaa shoppereita. Siskolta nyysitty batiikkivärjättyä kangasta yhdistettynä mustaan farkkuun ja mustaan pitsiin. Luonnossa tuo kangas on todella kaunis, lehtikuvioita ja sekalaista batiikkia.

In another area: sewing. One never has too many shopper bags. I "borrowed" from my sister a piece of extraordinary beautiful batique fabircs with leaves etc. Added with black jeans and black lace, it became a nice shopper for all things fun.

Nikama-ketju ; Vertebrae chain

Viimeksi ostettuani hopealankaa, sahasin melkein koko pätkän eri kokoisiksi renkaiksi. Kun näitä on valmiiksi tyrkyllä, on mukava kokeilla eri ketjumalleja.

Muutaman illan varastettuina hetkinä syntyi tämä kokeilu eli Nikamaketju, renkaat AR 6, AR4 ja AR3.5, tuntuu toimivan hyvin. Mukava helppo malli, taas jahka pääsee alkuun.

Last time after purchasing the silver wire, I practically sawed it into jumprings the whole lot. Thus it is easy to try out new chain mail models in the stolen moments of every day life. Here is the last finished one, a Vertebrae chain, using AR6, AR4 and AR3.5 rings. Easy to make, once you get started.

Kiviä ja ketjuja; Stones and chains

Niitä helppoja uuden vuoden lupauksiani oli jälleen opetella uusia taitoja. Eli kevätkaudella olen kivikurssilla hiomassa kiviä. Kuvassa eka yritelmäni, 3 cm halkaisijaltaan oleva unakiitti, jonka olen pyörtöhionut kapussiksi.

One of the "easy to keep" New Year's resolutions was to learn new skills (in hobbies), thus, I am attending stone courses, where I learn to form my own jewellery stones. Here is my very first one, diameter 3 cm, Unakite cabochon.

Tämä sormustekele pääsi pannastaan työpöydältä. Olin saanut päähäni, että tuo iso kivi olisi kierossa ja mun pitäisi istuttaa se uusiksi. Mutta uudelleen tarkasteluni (ja mittaus) osoitti, että se on riittävän suorassa. Visuaalinen kierousongelma ratkaistui sillä, että painelin kynnet paremmin kiven myötä ja viilasin yläpinnat näyttämään samoilta. Eli siis viimeistelyä hiukan! Ja nyt kannan sormusta ylpeydellä, ite tehty! Topaasi on 8 mm ja ametisti 3 mm.

This ring was released from ban on my work table. After finishing the piece, I noticed that the stone was askew and I needed to re-adjust. But, alas, I re-evaluated the situation and actually measured it, only to notice that it is actually enough straight. To make it look ok, I attached the claws more thoroughly along the stone and filed them to look similar. The result is very appealing and I am wearing the ring with pride: handmade by my own hands !

Ja sitten olen sahaillut 15 mm hopeaa ja selkeästi joutunut koukkuun näiden ketjujenkin kanssa. Ristiketjua ja kirjoakaattia.

I have also sawed 15 meters silver into rings. I have clearly grown fond of creating silver chains. Here is "Cross" (don't know English name for the model) with fancy agate.

Mattoketjua - European 4-1

Sain hankittua 1mm lankaa ja samaten siten sain valmiiksi oman ketjunikin (Mattoketju, AR4). On yllättävää kuinka paljon a) materiaalia, b) aikaa menee yksittäisen n. 20 cm ranneketjun valmistukseen. Mutta kaikki ponnistelu on tuloksen arvoista. Ihastelen ketjua ranteessani.

(Tällä kertaa olin kaukonäköinen ja hankin samalla pidemmän pätkän lankaa, jospa jotain muitakin malleja tulisi kokeiltua pakkasten lauhduttua).

Finally I managed to purchase some more 1mm round silver wire and finalised also my own bracelet (European 4-1 with AR4). It is surprising how much a) material you need, b) work effort it takes, in order to finalise the product. But all efforts are well worth. I am currently admiring the chain aournd my wrist.

(This time I was also looking at the future, and got some extra wire at the same time, should I get an inspiration to try some new models once the cold weather settles).

Joulun jälkeen - After Xmas

En tiedä kumpi on mukavampaa - joululahjan teko vai sen paketin tekeminen ? Tässä siskoilleni menneitä koruja. En ole kauheasti harrastanut näitä hopeaketjuja, mutta pakko nöyrtyä, kun nuo omat korudisaineritaidot eivät ole hirveän korkeat, ei kehtaa lahjoiksi asti tehdä.

Täytyy kuitenkin sanoa, että livenä nuo ranneketjut olivat tosi kivoja ja niinpä innostuin värkkäämään itsellenikin yhtä.

Taidanpa naisellisesti vaihtaa mielipidettäni ketjuista, tämäkin on antoisaa ja näitä voi koota ihan keittiönpöydän ääressä ihmisten ilmoilla.

Dunno, which is more fun: creating Xmas presents or the packaging for them? These are presents for my sisters. I have not created too many silver chains so far, but I had to be humble here, as my own jewellery designs I do not dare to give as presents yet (due to my meagre skills).

But I must say, that the end result, again, was worthwhile and I really need to change my opinion in a fly. This is once again very nice waste of time and you can assemble these sitting by your kitchen table, no need to hide away due to any rubbish or noise.

Toinen sisko sai Oili-ketjuun sopivat korvikset ja mallia "Inverted Round" olevan ranneketjun, jossa AR4 eli 1mm lanka ja 4 mm sisähalkaisija, oikein passeli.

One sister got earrings suited for her Flowers-chain and bracelet model "Inverted Round" with AR4 (1mm WD, 4 mm ID).

Toista lahjoin Kuningatar-ketjulla, josta 4mm halkaisijalla (1mm lanka eli AR4) tuli hiukan suorakaiteen oloinen ketju.

Other one got Boxchain bracelet (also referred as Queen's chain) with AR4 (WD 1mm, ID 4mm), with this it resulted into little bit rectangular rather than square profiled chain.

Oma mattoni jäi kesken, kun kaikki hopeat tuli jo sahattua, omasta jäi uupuun 2 cm. Joten täytyy taas pyhien jälkeen tilata hopeaa........ :-)

My own European 4 by 1 bracelet did not get finished yet, as I managed to saw into rings all my wire and the right size ran out. So I need to order some more silver after holidays .... :-)

Marraskuun sormus - November ring

Kaamoksen keskellä huono kuva, mutta uutta valmista. Ylpeä olen siitä, että olen saanut edes kivet kiinni, mutta laatutarkastelu osoittaa isomman kiven olevan vinossa. Mulla on selkeästi prosessivika. Analyysini perusteella on vaikea saada kiveä kiinni suoraan, kun sitä työskennellessä tarkastalee pää vinossa :-) No, jahka taas intoudun, niin nappaan sen irti ja kerään tarmoni ja laitan sen kiinni (suoraan). Tekemällä oppii?

In the middle of winter darkness the picture is bad (bad macro). I am proud though that I achived at least the stone setting, but my quality control shows again the bogger stone to be askew. I seem to have a flwa in my work methods, as when setting the stone I tend to observe the work head bend, so the stone gets askew as well :-). Well, whe I get energy again, I will re-set the stone (straight this time).

Istukka on jo paljon pienempi, eikä niin karkea kuin edellinen. Tää vaatii kyllä kärsivällisyyttä. Hoksasin muuten miksi hopeakorujen tekeminen on niin kivaa, tää vaatii aika paljon ratkaisukykyä ja on välillä tosi haastavaa (ainakin polville, sillä nuo kivet pomppaa työstä pois ja sitten konttaan autotallin lattialla niitä hakemassa).

The stone mount is much smaller and not so coarse as the previous work, so I am getting better and more skillfu. This really requires patience. I, by the way, finally got the idea why silver jewellery making is so much fun. It really developps your solution finding skills and is quite challenging 8at least for my knees, as the stones keep jumping away from the work and I end up kneeling on the garage floor in trying to find the lost ones).

Pitkästä aikaa koruja! - Long time, no see, but finally jewellery!

Mulla on menossa korujen teon suhteen kausi, jolloin haluan oppia uusia tekniikoita tai muita juttuja, joilla laajentaa osaamistaan. Niinpä niitä valmiita tuotteita syntyy tosi harvaan, Käsityö kun todella on yritystä ja erehdystä. Tähän rannekoruun (ihan eka lukolla ja saranalla!) on mennyt lukematon määrä kurssi-iltoja kansalaisopistolla. Yhden illan juotin saranaa, toisen onnistuin sulattamaan ne pois tai pois paikoiltaan jne. Epätoivo valtasi mielen, mutta ihme tapahtui. Eilen vihdoin sain sen siihen vaiheeseen, että siinä on about toimiva lukko ja saranakin ehjänä. Istuin viilaamassa ja kiillottamassa pari tuntia autotallissa. Wit jewellery making I am in a phase where I want to learn new techniques or gigs to incorpate to my designs. It means that I do not finish pieces ever so often. Here is my very first bracelet with hinge and lock. It has taken me countless session in the evening course at the local school. One evening I spent soldering the hinge, while the during the next one I managed to melt almost away and so on. Making things with your hands is really a trial and error thing! But the result fulfills the HQS criteria (hobbyist quality standards): it looks like a bracelet, it fits my hand and it stays in one piece.

Live about 1 cm long and 1.5 mm wide - livenä sentin mittainen 1.5 mm paksu tuubi...

Lukko pitää ja jopa naksahtaa kiinni. Ulkonäkö on aika agraari.

The lock holds and even clicks when closing, but the design looks rather agrarian.

Koko komeus, ja mä olen itse ihan onnessani ja uskon taas kovasti itseeni. Ehkä tässä harrastamisen ZEN?
